One lucky Buddha

One more picture before I retire for the night (Blegz just left me for bed, and I'm soon to follow).

This Buddha is from the 13th century, and is one of the few things left from the old capital of Xieng Khuang.

The rest of the town was obliterated a few times over during the war, as the Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese army pushed across the plain from the northwest during the dry season, only to be pushed back by the Royalists and Hmong (with considerable air support from the US) during the rainy season. A cycle that was repeated annually for about a decade. Posted by Picasa
